Oscar-winning actress Mary Steenburgen stars as Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings in Universal's "Cross Creek." Dana Hill and Rip Torn portray the backwoods neighbors who would later inspire her creation of the memorable figures in her Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, The Yearling. Rawlings, a city-born-and-bred Northerner, took up residence in the unknown and wholly alien culture of the Florida Cracker in the late 1920s in a desperate attempt to find herself as a fiction writer. Producer Robert Radnitz ("Sounder") acquired the film rights to "Cross Creek" five years ago because of his deep admiration for the author. "Marjorie was a courageous woman," proclaims Radnitz. "How she becomes one with the people of Cross Creek and discovers the milieu of writing that was to occupy her life...how she finds romance... how she is forced to make her living in the orange grove fields she bought until she has achieved her status as a writer -- all of these elements encompass the qualities of an extraordinary and determined woman.
