Brought together at a Washington dinner party for prospective presidential candidates last year are, from left: Senator Fred Harris, party treasurer Robert Strauss, Senator Edmund Muskie, Representative Wilbur Mills, House Speaker Carl Albert, Senate Majority Leader Mike Mansfield, Senator Hubert Humphrey, Senator George McGovern and Senator Birch Bayh. O'Brien has conducted several private "unity" parlays with leading contenders. And out of these meetings have come campaign agreements which are without precedent.
