Out of the side of his mouth, John L. Lewis, United Mine Workers chief, tells a news conference in Washington, D.C., his UMW will help the Congress of Industrial Organizations Steelworkers if they go out on strike for higher wages. Lewis said steelmakers could afford to boost wages to cover increased living costs.
