1941 Press Photo Jim Harlan & Jane Wilson with injured egret in Des Moines, Iowa

Every photo in our collection is an original vintage print from a newspaper or news service archive, not a digital image. Please see our FAQ for more information.

Description
Egrets. Des Moines, Iowa. Jim Harlan, Iowa state conversation commissioner and Jane Wilson, were on hand to see an egret begin its flight back to the south by means of artificial wings. The bird was sent from Des Moines airport after its feathers failed to grow fast enough following an injury to permit it to make the trip under its own power before winter set in. The egret suffered a broken wing which has healed but the feathers, clipped so he would not damage the injured member again while struggling to free himself, have not grown out. The bird will be set free at New Orleans.

Photo is dated 1941.

Photo measures 5.5 x 8.75 inches.
