1942 Press Photo Don McIntosh & worker check Northwest Airlines cargo

Every photo in our collection is an original vintage print from a newspaper or news service archive, not a digital image. Please see our FAQ for more information.

Description
Aviation - Northwest Airlines. Don McIntosh checks mixed freight into a Northwest Airlines cargo plane headed for Alaska while E.E. Calvin lashes it into place. Note the size of the tires which fit neatly into the huge ship, and the metal loops along the ledge at the right side to which the shipments are made fast. The interiors of the planes have been divided - on paper - into 700 "units." Each unit was plotted for the pounds it could carry. Now the freight is weighed on the ground and loaded into the plane according to the unit weight chart.

Photo is dated 1942.

Photo measures 9.25 x 7.25 inches.
