1978 Press Photo Downtown Honolulu view from Punchbowl volcanic crater, Hawaii

Every photo in our collection is an original vintage print from a newspaper or news service archive, not a digital image. Please see our FAQ for more information.

Description
Honolulu, Hawaii. From the slopes of the Punchbowl volcanic crater is a vista of Waikiki to the east, downtown Honolulu to the south and the airport and Waianae mountains to the west. The crater is the site of the military National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific. Punchbowl's Hawaiian name is Puowaina (Hill of Sacrifice) while Diamond Head in the distance (about five miles away) is known to Hawaiians as Leahi (because it resembles the forehead of the ahi or yellow fin tuna). Private homes, schools, condominiums and Waikiki's hotels soar in the blue Hawaiian sky.

Photo is dated 1978.

Photo measures 10 x 8.25 inches.
