An ABC Motion Pictures production, "Silkwood." A Twentieth Century-Fox Release. Meryl Streep, Kurt Russell and Cher wear protective uniforms necessary for working in a plutonium processing plant. "Silkwood" (now at the Lakeside Cinema) is one of the bravest American films of the year. It is also one of the finest, though it likely will win few awards. The reason for this, quite simply, is that "Silkwood," like many brave works of art, is depressing, and depressing pictures, as we all know, don't win Oscars. (many deserving ones, like "Shoot the Moon" and "Sophie's Choice" don't even get nominated.) In his return to dramatic filmmaking after an eight-year sabbatical, director Mike Nichols gives us the story of Karen Silkwood, a young Oklahoma woman who died in a mysterious car crash in 1974 as she was on her way to expose to the news media the allegedly life-threatening conditions at the plutonium plant where she worked.

Photo is dated 1983.
