Description
Ruins of the Temple of Olympian Zeus, built in 470-457, B.C., is the most imposing building in Olympia. It was 212 feet long, 90 feet wide and 66 feet high. It contained one of the Seven Wonders of the (ancient) World, the 42-foot-high gold and ivory statue of the god Zeus, fashioned at Olympia by the great sculptor Pheidias. Built on the artificially elevated ground, it dominated the other buildings in the sacred Altis.
