John L. Lewis OIO President, and Dr. John R. Steelman, Federal Mediator, are shown in New York early May 11 as they announced approval of a compromise agreement which would permit striking miners to go back to work for individual operators willing to sign contracts with the United Mine Workers. No complete agreement between industry and UMW was reached despite an appeal for peace from President Roosevelt.
