Description
Acts on own for church and country London, England . . . Britain's Princess Margaret is shown (left) in her car as she left Uckfield House in Sussex for Clarence House yesterday where she formally announced she would not marry Group Captain Peter Townsend. Townsend is shown (right photo) as he left Clarence House after his final meeting with the princess he cannot wed. In a personal statement Princess Margaret told the world, in part, that "Mindful of the Church's teaching that Christian marriage is indissoluble, and conscious of my duty to the commonwealth, I have resolved to put these considerations before all others." The mention of marriage as "indissoluble" recalled the fact that Townsend is a divorced man with his former wife living.

Photo is dated 1955.

Photo measures 9.25 x 7.25 inches.
