Des Moines, April 25 - Bounds to second record - Gayle Hopkins of Arizona barely missed the national triple jump record as he competed in the hop-step-and-jump event at the Drake Relays today. His effort measured 51 feet, 8 inches. This is almost two feet better than the old Drake record of 49-9 set by Houston's Jack Smyth in 1958. His winning jump was just one and one-quarter inches under the NCAA mark of 59-9 1/4 set by Luther Hays of Southern California in 1961. Yesterday Hopkins shattered Jesse Owens' 29-year-old record in the broad jump with a leap of 26-2.

Photo is dated 1964.

Photo measures 8 x 10.25 inches.
