United Mine Workers Pres. John L. Lewis testifies to the senate. John L. Lewis, 78-year-old United Mine Workers president, appeals for passage of legislation to require all mines to comply with the Federal coal mine safety act. Testifying before a Senate labor subcommittee, Lewis said today the present exemption of mines employing 14 or less men underground from enforcement of health and safety standards has cost many lives. He said the men working these small mines should have "the equality of protection for which they pray."
