1955 Press Photo Rafael Calderon Guardia, chief of the Costa Rican rebels

Rafael Calderon Guardia, chief of the Costa Rican rebels, is pictured behind the insurgents' lines during the battle with government forces in northwestern Costa Rica. Life Magazine staff photographer George Skadding made this picture after his capture by the rebels last week along with five other correspondents. The captives were released across the Nicaraguan border Thursday as the government forces apparently gained the upper hand over the insurgents.

Photo is dated 1955.
