Going Goannas, The late Australian goannas are among the most spectacular living reptiles and are highly prized by collectors. Many were exported from Australia before a dan was imposed in 1962, but naturalists fear that too much damages been done to the species and it may not survive. Irresponsible shooting of goannas by bush natives and a brisk trade in reptile skins have also taken a serious toll. To help contract this decline, Australian experts have been studying the habits and habitats of goannas, and making forays into backlands to capture specimens for closer study.
