1958 Press Photo Pilgrims assemble at Miraculous Grotto in Lourdes for Mass

Pilgrims assemble before the famous Miraculous Grotto in Lourdes to assist at Mass. It was here in 1858 that Our Lady appeared 18 times to the 14-year-old Bernadette, who was canonized a Saint in 1933. During the 1958 Centennial of Lourdes, over 10,000,000 pilgrims are expected to visit the Shrine. For American devout, the American Express Travel Service in cooperation with Catholic Bishops is organizing more than 60 Lourdes Centennial Pilgrimages.
