1976 Press Photo Spanish-American War vet Anthony Denenca honored at reception

Holding a folded American Flag, Spanish-American War vet Anthony Joseph Denenca. 100, receives a certificate of merit from Kenner Mayor Joseph S. Yenni during a reception in Denenca's honor Thursday at Kenner City Hall. The centenarian was honored by the Italian-American Association of Jefferson as one of the few soldiers of Italian descent to serve the U.S. in that conflict. Although great numbers of Italian immigrants poured into the U.S. in the 1890s, many old enough to serve had not reached citizen status by 1898.
