Description
Actors - The crossing of the Atlantic in Christopher Columbus' Santa Maria was far from a happy one, as history reveals and as English movie producer Sydney Box shows in his movie, "Christopher Columbus," starring Fredric March and Florence Eldridge, and soon to be shown in America. Crews of the three vessels in the flotilla feared the uncharted waters and begged Columbus to turn back. A confidant of Columbus noted the slowness of the voyage in the log book and was told that false entries were made to keep the crew from realizing how far from home they were. Trouble started 19 days out, but after 30 days the Santa Maria crew mutinied. Here's what happened, as shown in the film. Wielding sword and backed by loyal men, Columbus (played by Fredric March) defended the poop. In the midst of the battle a cannon was fired aboard the Pinta - followed by a shout - "Land ho!"
