Description
Barber J.H. Pugh works past 10 pm on election eve. In chair: W.M. Dearman. Most week nights are quiet in Brooklyn, Miss., a town about 20 miles south of Hattiesburg. By 8:30 pm, the stores are closed, the barber has finished his last 50 cent haircut, the benches in front of the cafes are almost deserted and few cars are parked along the blacktopped road that is the town's main street. But this particular Monday night, things are different. At 8:30 pm, there are about 150 cars and 400 people on the street. It's election night! And residents of the Brooklyn area are responding in traditional fashion to the old-time political fever that sweeps over them every four years when Mississippi picks its governor and other officials.

Photo is dated 1959.

Photo measures 8.25 x 10 inches.
