1975 Press Photo Mining Operations in Capitol Reef National Park, Utah

A front-end loader lifts a slab of rock mined from a claim amid the scenic grandeur of Capitol Reef National Park, Utah. Behind rises the rock formation known as "The Castle," a park landmark. The claim's owner, Clair Bird (center) watches the operation. Bird obtained his lease in 1964, before the land became park territory in 191, and he intends to continue mining in spite of moves to stop him.
