1972 Press Photo Rural Life Museum displays early Louisiana artifacts

Every photo in our collection is an original vintage print from a newspaper or news service archive, not a digital image. Please see our FAQ for more information.

Description
School - Clementine Hunter paintings on wall - Burden Research Plantation - from the quarter houses is literally filled to the rafters with early Louisiana artifacts - farm machinery, pirogues, plantation bells and such oddities as a machine from which a peanut vendor dispensed his roasted products. A fine collection of medical paraphernalia is there waiting for completion of the commissary-doctor's office in which it will be displayed. Burden says the museum needs two more of the galvanized buildings to adequately house all the items. The Burdens have already transferred title of the plantation's home to the university. It was built in 1855 for their grandparents, who received Windrush as a wedding gift, and will ultimately be restored to its original condition and become a part of the museum.

Photo is dated 1972.
