Rising Toward a Main Span of 1,235 feet across the Mississippi River at Baton Rouge, the approaches to the new cantilever bridge show trusses and main Connections shop riveted, floor beams are shop welded and all field connections are all high-strength bolted. Total bridge and approaches' length will be over two miles. Six Lane Bridge to Connect Port Allen - Baton Rouge, La. - What is believed to be the largest clear span cantilever bridge in the federal interstate system is edging toward the Mississippi River here. A new bridge, with a main span over the river of 1,235 feet, will connect Baton Rouge and Port Allen, carrying six lanes of traffic. Length of the bridge and its six flanking deck truss and its six flanking deck truss approach spans - three at each end - will be 4,550 feet.
