1975 Press Photo General Electric tests CF6 commercial jet engine against fans

Every photo in our collection is an original vintage print from a newspaper or news service archive, not a digital image. Please see our FAQ for more information.

Description
General Electric turned on 13 seven-foot fans to try to "blow-out" its CF6 commercial jet engine, but the engine won every time. Using its unique crosswind testing facility, GE technicians directed the more than 61 mile-per-hour blast of the huge fans at the rear of the engine. Purpose of the tests is to check the operating characteristics of the engine where strong winds may be present, such as when jetliners sit or taxi on the runway prior to takeoff.

Photo is dated 1975.
