From left: Humphrey, Governor Robert McNair of South Carolina, Senator Strom Thurmond, Republican-South Carolina, and Russell. Russell resigned as governor to take the seat left vacant by the death of Senator Olin Johnston, Democrat-South Carolina. McNair moved up to the governorship from his lieutenant governor post. Russell is a Democrat.
