Bishops Lesslie Newbigin, James Matthews discuss merger, MO. Bishop Lesslie Newbigin of the Church of South India (left) expressed support Tuesday of a Plan of Union for combining nine Protestant denominations into a new church. The bishop's Asian church pioneered in a merger of different Protestant organizations 22 years ago. He discussed the plan here with United Methodist Bishop James K. Matthews of Boston, Massachusetts, during Tuesday meetings of delegates to the Consultation on Church Union. St. Louis, Missouri
