Blasting away from Cape Kennedy, Florida, Sunday is the 130-foot-tall Titan 3C rocket, heading a communications spacecraft toward a stationary orbit 22,300 miles over the Pacific, west of South Africa. Called TACCOMSAT for Tactical Communications Satellite, it is the forerunner of a satellite network that could link small military units on front lines, at sea and in aircraft.

Photo is dated 1969.
