U.S. Air Force test pilot, flier Lt. Col. Joseph W. Kittinger. A daring U.S. Air Force test pilot and flier since 1949, Lt. Col. Joseph W. Kittinger Jr. has been shot down over North Vietnam. In the 1950's he was hailed as the "first man in space" when he rode a gondola under a balloon to altitude of 96,000 feet in 1957.
