Democrats voted today to strip controversial Representative Adam Clayton Powell of the chairmanship of the House Education and Labor Committee. Members emerging from the party's caucus, held behind closed doors in the House chamber, said a compromise motion to take the chairmanship away temporarily lost on a 122-88 vote and that the vote to remove Powell as chairman was carried overwhelmingly.
