1964 Press Photo Philadelphia old structures included in facelifting project

Every photo in our collection is an original vintage print from a newspaper or news service archive, not a digital image. Please see our FAQ for more information.

Description
Philadelphia, the shrine of American independence, is making a deliberate attempt to combine 20th-century living with the city's colonial heritage through a redevelopment project called Society Hill. To preserve the colonial atmosphere, the city has come up with a special treatment for the 20-block project area, often called "America's most historic mile." These old structures will remain to be included in facelifting project. In the background, luxury apartment buildings give a modern touch at one end of the area.

Photo is dated 1964.

Photo measures 9 x 7 inches.
