Description
Sjafruddin Prawiranegara smiles in rebel-held Padang, Sumatra, after taking office earlier this month as premier of Indonesia's revolutionary government. There were predictions President Sukarno's government planned a quick knockout of the rebels in Sumatra even as the latter tightened up anti-invasion measures today. Sjafruddin, 47, was Sukarno's brother-in-arms during rebellion against the Dutch. He split with the Indonesian president over latter's controversial guided democracy plan and its provision to include Communists in government.

Photo is dated 1958.
