Herbert F. Owens, a 36-year-old engineer at International Business Machine Corporation's Baltimore branch, poses with a device that won him $32,000 as a company suggestion award. IBM officials said the award was probably the largest of its type ever made. Owens' idea involved a design change in the drive unit for magnetic tape used in high-speed computers.

Photo is dated 1961.
