1971 Press Photo Old Glory flies over trapped SS Observer in Suez Canal

Every photo in our collection is an original vintage print from a newspaper or news service archive, not a digital image. Please see our FAQ for more information.

Description
A tattered Old Glory flies over the American vessel SS Observer, one of 14 foreign flag vessels caught in the Suez Canal in the outbreak of war between Israel and the Arab states in 1967. Like the other ships, the Observer is now moored in Egypt's Great Bitter Lakes on the canal, waiting for reopening of the canal. Release of the trapped vessels however, depends on settlement of differences between Egypt and Israel--an uncertain prospect.

Photo is dated 1971.

Photo measures 8 x 10 inches.
