William J. Nelligan (left) of San Francisco, a labor union member who was backed by party moderates, is congratulated by Fred Hall after being named new president of the California Republican Assembly at the group's state convention at Anaheim, California, today. Hall, the outgoing president, is a former governor of Kansas. Nelligan's opponent, Harry Waddell, had welcomed support of the John Birch Society.
