1972 Press Photo Griffith Park Observatory photos show stages of moon eclipse

Every photo in our collection is an original vintage print from a newspaper or news service archive, not a digital image. Please see our FAQ for more information.

Description
This sequence of pictures taken at the Griffith Park Observatory here early this morning shows four stages in the total eclipse of the moon. The pictures one through four were taken at 1:14 am; 1:30 am; 1:50 am; and 2:26 am just before the total eclipse at 2:35 am. A total eclipse of the moon will not be seen in the continental United States again until 1975. Lunar eclipses occur when the moon moves into a shadow thrown by the earth blocking the sun's rays.

Photo is dated 1972.

Photo measures 10 x 8 inches.
