Description
Standing patiently in line along a flight of steps, residents of Katmandu, Nepal, wait to draw their rations of critically short water. Prolonged drought had reduced the city's supply to a two-day level and had caused extreme crop damage throughout the country. The government ordered a day of national prayer to Baruba, the rain God. The sacrificial fires were lighted on a day which began bright and cloudless. By noon a steady rain, the first in two months, was falling.

Photo is dated 1958.
