California's Big Bill Knowland, abruptly retired after defeat in the race for governor last fall, poses at his desk at the Oakland Tribune, where he is assistant publisher of his family's newspaper. After spending half of his 50 years in politics, the new Knowland says the transition from public to private life has not been too difficult.
