Description
Johannes Strijdom, left, a stern believer in white supremacy, succeeded Dr. Daniel Francois Malan as prime minister of South Africa in 1954. His minister of native affairs was Dr. Hendrik Frensch Verwoerd, right, current prime minister who was the victim of an attempted assassination recently. Former Zulu chief Albert Luthuli, center, president of the outlawed General African National Congress, is most often mentioned as a moderate leader. White moderates and intellectuals are calling for consultation with African moderates. Luthuli is presently in jail under emergency regulations.
