1969 Press Photo Governor Lester Maddox displays printed petitions at Capitol

Georgia Governor Lester Maddox displays some of the 20,000 printed petitions he prepared to mail out today from his Atlanta office for signatures from throughout the country. The petitions, addressed to the President and members of Congress, urge removal of "Federal control from public education" before communities are engulfed by chaos, violence and crime similar "to that which surrounds public education in Washington, D.C. Maddox said more than 100,000 would be distributed.
