1969 Press Photo Scientists see features of Mars from Mariner 6 photo

Close examination by scientists at Jet Propulsion Laboratory of this photo of Mars, the 44th returned to earth Wednesday night by Mariner 6, reveal hitherto unknown features and detail, they said today. One such, they said, is a narrow band extending northward from the large dark mass known as Mare Cimmerium near the center of the photo. Oval features along the edge of the south polar cap suggest craters, they said.

Photo is dated 1969.
