The Reverend John J. McLaughlin, Jesuit priest who is the Republican candidate for the United States Senate from Rhode Island, said at noon news conference in Providence, Rhode Island that he has been released of clerical duties by the New England provincial of the order. Earlier, The Most Reverend Russell J. McVinney, D.D., Bishop of Providence, had issued a statement saying Father McLaughlin is running for the Senate without the Bishop's permission or endorsement. The priest is opposing the veteran Democrat, Senator John O. Pastore.
