Henry Lewis, first African American director of an American symphony orchestra, conducts the New Jersey Symphony in a vacant lot of Newark's predominantly African American Central Ward. The concert Sunday was the first in a series of three held in honor of the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Lewis became director of the orchestra last month.
