1963 Press Photo Democratic Action Party candidate Leoni casts presidential vote

Raul Leoni, Democratic Action Party candidate for Venezuelan president drops his vote in ballot box in Caracas today. Early returns gave Leoni a substantial lead in the seven-candidate field. Terrorist death threats, sniper fire and sabotage failed to prevent a massive outpouring of voters to select a successor for retiring Venezuelan President Romule Betancourt. Officials estimated a turn-out of 95 to 96 percent of the electorate. All men and women over 18 are required by law to vote.
