1971 Press Photo Colin Irwin arrives in Nome, Alaska on Northwest Passage voyage

Colin Irwin, 25, of England, finished the first leg of a voyage he hopes will make him the first to sail along through the ice-choked Northwest Passage on his arrival in Nome. Irwin began his voyage just over two weeks ago from the Yukon River village of Galena. He is sailing a cigar-shaped 18-foot sailboat named the "Endeavor."
