Former Soviet Premier Nikita S. Khrushchev pounded on his desk during speech by U.N. Secretary General Dag Hammarskjold before the General Assembly in New York on October 3, 1960. He had challenged Hammarskjold to resign and the secretary, in a fighting speech, refused to do so. Seated at left is Soviet Foreign Minister Andrei Gromyko. Khrushchev was reported to have died Saturday.
