Anne Sexton, the Pulitzer Prize winning poet who will be buried today, "had a terrible hunger to die," says her closest literary friend, Maxine Kumin. "Death was in Annie like blood in her veins," said Mrs. Kumin, a poet who won the Pulitzer last year. The two women had been writing companions and confidants since hey met in a poetry class 10 years ago. Last Friday, Mrs. Sexton's body was found in her car, parked in her garage, its engine running.

Photo is dated 1974.

Photo measures 8 x 10.75 inches.
