1972 Press Photo Soviet exchange student Merab Kurashvily departs for Russia

Soviet exchange student Merab Kurashvily, his neck covered by a scarf, heads for the Soviet Meroflot plane early Thursday morning at Kennedy Airport in New York. The 36-year-old Russian was allowed to leave the U.S. after telling immigration officials that he was going on his own accord. Last Sunday he had slashed his wrists and throat at the same airport.
