Police Chief Ted Holmes, 28, of Vail, Colorado, one of five hostages taken by two gunmen following an abortive car theft and holdup at the mountain ski resort, is shown after he freed himself from a tree to which he had been handcuffed on Vail Pass, east of Vail Villiage. Holmes uprooted the small tree to free himself and joined the widespread search for the fugitives.
