1968 Press Photo Joan Green reads "Liberation" magazine in school office

Every photo in our collection is an original vintage print from a newspaper or news service archive, not a digital image. Please see our FAQ for more information.

Description
Joan Green, 16, spends five minutes or so each school day morning in the dean's office at Ross Sterling High School in Houston. She does so while other students are saying Oath of Allegiance to the flag. She chooses not to recite the pledge. Miss Green says "It started two years ago but no one noticed until last week." "I didn't want to be a hypocrite and the oath means pledging to fight. I will not fight under any circumstances." Her mother says she does not agree with all of her daughter's ideas but supports her right to her own opinions.

Photo is dated 1968.

Photo measures 8 x 10.5 inches.
