1963 Press Photo A study of faces of people of the Himalayas - now07860

Every photo in our collection is an original vintage print from a newspaper or news service archive, not a digital image. Please see our FAQ for more information.

Description
Here are studies of faces of typical onpa people who eke their living from grain fields and herds in the area of Owang, India, high in the Himalayas. Towang is a 350-year-old Buddhist monastery town. It was captured by the Chinese Communists late last year and given up voluntarily early this year. The Communists generally left the onpas alone, allowing them to carry on their farm life. Hats worn at right are made from yak skin. The tails carry off rain water.

Photo is dated 1963.

Photo measures 8 x 10.25 inches.
