A pioneer in heart transplants worked today to ward off any possible rejection reactions in the Southeast's first human heart transplant patient. Dr. James Hardy, who five years ago made medical history when he transplanted the heart of a chimpanzee into a 68-year-old man, led a team of 20 medical specialists yesterday in performing the human heart transplant. Dr. James D. Hardy, professor of surgery at University Medical Center in Jackson, MS, led a surgical team which transplanted a heart from a stroke victim to a 48-year-old man yesterday.
