Theresa Mullarkey, a Philadelphia Zoo secretary, bends an ear to the zoo's tame groundhog in an effort--for the sake of the photographer--to get an advance prediction on the nation's weather. Groundhog Day, which the followers swear by as a reliable weather-scope, will occur Sunday, February 2. Believers say that if the groundhog sees his shadow Sunday, he'll turn around and retreat to his burrow, there to sleep out six more weeks of Winter. If no shadow, then there will be an early Spring.

Photo is dated 1964.

Photo measures 10 x 8.25 inches.
